Game Design & UEFN Tips

Simple insights that help make your maps more fun, readable, and engaging.

1. Create Clear Visual Landmarks

+

Players should always know where they are. Use strong shapes, colors, and silhouettes to help them orient themselves.

A memorable landmark gives the map its identity and makes navigation easier.

2. Focus on Player Flow

+

Design paths that feel natural to follow. Avoid forcing players into sharp turns or dead ends.

Smooth transitions increase fun and reduce frustration.

3. Use Lighting to Guide the Player

+

Bright areas attract attention, dark areas hide secrets or create danger.

Use lighting contrast to highlight where players should go next.

4. Add Replayability Elements

+

Add small random elements, new paths, or timed challenges to keep the experience fresh.

A good map should stay fun even after 50+ runs.

5. Give Players Quick, Meaningful Decisions

+

Don't overwhelm players with choices—but give them enough control to feel clever.

Two or three meaningful options are better than ten shallow ones.
