What are the basic roles?

The most important roles for a team are:

  • “Sweeper” - combines a high speed with a high attack and/or special attack to KO (best case) multiple enemies
  • “Wall” - combines high HP with high defense or special attack to stop sweepers from KO-ing multiple of your own pokemon
  • “Wallbreaker” - combines high attack and/or special attack with abilities and/or items that boost damage output even further to break through enemy walls

These roles should be part of almost any team, safe for a select few, more advanced, special tactics that will not be covered in the basic guide.

Advanced Roles

On surface level, stallbreakers fulfill a similar role to wallbreakers. Both try to hinder walls at doing their job, but the methods are very different. While wallbreakers do it through sheer damage output, stallbreakers stop walls from using their status moves like Toxic, Protect or Recover or set up entry hazards like Stealth Rocks. Some stallbreakers achieve this by virtue of their ability, like for example magic bounce, which simply reflects the status move back at the opponent. Others use moves like Taunt that prevent the usage of status moves in the first place for a set amount of turns, forcing walls to either use their oftentimes single, weak attacking move and preventing them from healing up, or to switch out.

Breeding Pokemon for CP

Breeding allows you to optimize various important factors of your Pokemon, mainly its ability, nature, IVs and egg moves. Usually you'd do this by giving one Pokemon of your wanted species together with a Ditto into daycare together, which will result in them producing an egg after some time that then hatches into the first stage of your Pokemon. Important to note is that, if neither of the two Pokemon in daycare are Ditto, the resulting egg will become the first stage of the female one.
